Course Description
OPL 405&406,Ophthalmology I&II
Description:
It familiarizes the student with the anatomical structure, physiological functions and pathological aspects of the eye. It enable the student to acquire knowledge about the basic aspects of vision and of ophthalmology, making him capable of diagnosing the different types of ophthalmic lesions and diseases. The course also allows a medical student and a fresh graduate to deal with the ophthalmology problems and emergencies. Also, it enables the student to be familiar with the instruments and tools used in ophthalmology clinics which aid in the diagnosis and management.
Course Contents:
First semester: OPL 405(Ophthalmology I)
Anatomical and physiological functions of the different components of the eye.
Diseases affecting the eye lids &lachrymal glands.
Diseases of the conjunctiva.
Corneal disorders.
Sclera
Uveal tract
Disorders affecting the lens of the eyes
Vitreous
Glaucoma & disorders of intraocular pressure
Second semester: OPL 406(Ophthalmology II)
Diseases of the retina
Optic nerve
Errors of refractions
Squint and disorder of extraocular muscles
Neuro-ophthalmology
Ocular trauma
Ocular tumor
Ocular manifestation of systemic diseases
Teaching Methods
1.Lectures (3 credit hours)

3. Students seminars, oral presentations & prepared essays
Attendance Criteria:
The minimal acceptable attendance is 70% in order to sit the final examination.
Examination Description:
Formative & Summative exams
- Written, case study & oral for assessment of knowledge and understanding
- Clinical for assessment of clinical skills
- Research for training the student how to get medical information from library and internet websites and how to organize and present knowledge.
Mark Distribution:
A total of 100 marks distributed as follows:
20% Year Activity and Mid Term Exam at October 6 Universit
10% End-round Exam at Kasr El-Eini Faculty of Medicine.
40% Written End-year final Exam
30% Clinical & Oral End-year Exam
