Course Description

ENT 409,410 Ear, Nose &Throat I &II

Description:

It enables students to be familiar with the anatomy and physiology of ear, nose, larynx, pharynx and trachea. It also allows them to diagnose & properly treat the common ENT diseases & their complications. Furthermore  students are expected to deal with first aid E.N.T  emergencies until transferred to  a secondary  level if needed..  

Course Contents:

First Semester (ENT 409):

1. Otology:

  • Anatomy, Physiology of the ear and Examination and exploration of ear function (hearing test and exploration, for vertigo) & hearing aids
  • Symptomatology of ear diseases
  • External ear diseases: Congenital anomalies, trauma, foreign bodies, wax & ear wash, inflammations and tumors
  • Middle car diseases: Congenital anomalies, trauma, and inflammations: acute suppurative otitis media, chronic non-suppurative otitis media, cholesteatoma and complications of CSOM, otosclerosis and tumors middle ear
  • Inner car diseases: Meniere's disease, labyrinthitis, vertigo deafness (conductive& Sensorineural) progressive & sudden or fluctuant, congenital deafness, acoustic neuroma.
  • Facial nerve: anatomy, trauma and paralysis
  • Ear operations: myringotomy. Cortical mastoidectomy, radical mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, stapedectomy and stapedotomy
  • Ear emergencies: otorrhoea. otalgia, trauma, sudden hearing loss and dizziness.

2. The nose & paranasal sinuses:

  • Anatomy, physiology, examination and investigations of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Symptoms and signs of nasal disease
  • Congenital diseases, trauma, foreign bodies of the nose, oroantral fistula and CSF rhinorrhoea.
  • Inflammations of the nose: acute and chronic rhinitis. Sinusitis: acute, chronic and their complications. Allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, nasal polyps antrochoanal polyps and fungal infections
  • Diseases of nasal septum, benign and malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses
  • Nose operations:
  • Nose emergencies: epistaxis, ocular complications facial pain, sleep disorders: snoring & sleep apnoea syndrome

Second Semester (ENT 410):

 3. Larynx:

  • Anatomy, Physiology, examinations and investigation & symptomatology of larynx (stridor, hoarsness pain, cough..).
  • Acute and chronic laryngitis (polyp, singer's nodes, leucoplakia, granulomata of the larynx e.g. laryngoscleroma, syphilis, lupus valgaris and atrophic laryngitis).
  • Vocal cord paralysis, tumors of the larynx.
  • Laryngeal operations: tracheostomy, indications & types of laryngectomy, microsurgery, laser surgery
  • Laryngeal emergencies: upper respiratory air way obstruction, acute  epiglottitis,     acute
  • Laryngotracheobronchitis, acute specific laryngitis

4. Pharynx & oral cavity:

  • Anatomy, Physiology, examination investigations & symptomatology of Pharynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx & hypopharynx).
  • Diseases of nasopharynx: adenoid, tumors (begin, intermediate & malignant).
  • Acute pharyngitis and chronic tonsillitis, tonsillectomy, faucial diphtheria, infectious mononucleosis, Vincent's angina, pharyngitis with blood diseases, moniliasis, chronic non specific and specific pharyngitis and suppuration of pharynx (peritonsillar abscess,, parapharyngeal abscess, retropharyngeal abscess and ludwig's angina.
  • Stomatitis and oropharyngeal ulcerations, Plummer Vinson syndrome.
  • Tumors & pharyngeal pouch.

Operations: adenoidectomy & tonsillectomy.

5.Oesophagus:

  • Anatomy. Physiology, examinations and investigation & symptomatology of oesophagus and oesophagoscopy.
  • Foreign body, corrosives of the cardia, stricture, perforations and tumors of the oesophagus.

6.Trachea & cervical pathology:

  • Anatomy and examinations including endoscopy, inhaled foreign body, neck swelling and cervical lymphadenopathy
  • Parotid gland, submandibular salivary gland (inflammations and tumors)

Thyroid gland: inflammations and tumors.

Teaching Methods

1.     Lectures (2 credit hours)

2.     Practical sections, ( 1credit hour)

3.     Students seminars, oral presentations & prepared essays

 Attendance Criteria:

The minimal acceptable attendance is 75% in order to sit for the final examination.

 Examination Description:

Formative & Summative exams

-         Written, case study & oral for assessment of knowledge and understanding

-         Clinical for assessment of clinical skills

-         Research for training the student how to get medical information from library and internet websites and how to organize and present knowledge)

Mark Distribution:

-         A total of 100 marks distributed as follows:

-         20% Year Activity and Mid Term Exam at October 6 University

-         10% End-round Exam at Kasr El-Aini Faculty of Medicine.

-         40% Written End-year final Exam

-         30% Clinical & Oral End-year Exam.
