Democracy and the Arab Spring: Opportunities and Challenges
Introduction
The revolutions, protests and public uprisings in the halls of the Arab political scene of Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Bahrain and Syria raise a number of questions and problems that relate to the present ruling regimes and the future of citizens in the Arab states. The Arab citizen, as it seems, is every now and then haunted by the sense of anxiety for being denied the right to self-determination.
The Arab spring launched by revolutions of freedom and dignity places the Arab peoples at a defining moment of self-determination. This in turn imposes the necessity of reforming the status quo in the light of the recent changes, improving the citizens’ standard of living and quality of life and exploring the nations’ future. The Arab peoples have to acknowledge the great global, regional and local challenges ahead, in addition to the variables of modernity, the dangers of globalization, the mechanisms of competition and the futer of the Arabic Regional system versus Greater Middle East enterprise. Today’s world has become highly complicated with the changes in perspectives, the diversity of strategies, the modification of theories and thought, and the variety of interests and relations. This indeed necessitates a reconsideration of the dominating patterns of thought, which involve new insights, enlightening thought and analytical understanding.
