Obligatory Medical Laboratory Requirements
MLMICR 401 Medical Microbiology II & Virology
The course includes systematic study of bacteria (types, morphology, and staining). It also covers microbiological examination of water, air and milk. Food poisoning and hospital infection control are also discussed.
The course also provides the student with basics of human viruses, pathogenesis and control of viral diseases. Major fungal pathogens in man including mycosis and actinomycetes are also presented.
MLHEMA 402 Hematology
The course include basic knowledge about the blood cell types and formation "hematopoiesis", introduction to stem cell disorder, anemia’s, hemostasis and hemostatic disorders. Leukemia
MLENG 403 Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
A brief introduction to biomedical engineering with special emphasis on medical laboratory instrumentation.
MLBAN 404 Blood Banking
The course focuses on the genetics in blood grouping, the ABO and non ABO blood group systems. Blood grouping and pre-transfusion testing. Complications of blood transfusions. Blood collection, processing and storage. Replacement therapy in blood diseases.
MLCHEM 405 Basic Biochemistry III
The course provides the students with a good understanding of basic biochemical concepts including the mechanism of enzyme action and the clinical application of enzymes in diagnosis of diseases. The course also deals with the protein metabolism, plasma proteins, immunoglobulins, hemoglobin metabolism, and specialized amino acids metabolism focusing on the related inborn errors of metabolism, the metabolism of purines & pyrimidines and the DNA & RNA types, organization in the cell and the basics of molecular biology.
MLCLIN 501 Clinical Chemistry I
The course completes the study of fundamental biochemical concepts. It provides an understanding of the physiology of organs and systems in health and diseases; and laboratory investigations of the disorders affecting these organs and systems. Analytical methods for obtaining clinically useful data, quality control of the methods and correlation of data with normal and diseased states are also presented.
MLMOLE 502 Molecular Biology
The course focuses on the basic principles, human genome, nucleic acids probes, hybridization, thermal cyclers, DNA sequencers. In-vitro amplification reaction (PCR), molecular diagnostics, infections, genetic diseases and malignancy.
MLIMMU 503 Clinical Immunology & serology
Natural immunity "cellular-humoral" immunogenicity and antigens, immunoglobins, complement system, immune response system. Immunization, hypersensitivity reactions, cytokines, autoimmune diseases, immune deficiency disorders and immunology laboratory.
MLHEAL 504 Health informatics
The course presents medical records (electronic), telemedicine, structure and sequence analysis. It also focuses on uses of computer data bases to store, retrieve and assist in understanding biological information. Computer programming and algorithm development. Computational biology tools. The course covers data transfer, data presentation and structure.
MLHIST 601 Histopathology & cytology I
Introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of special staining procedure for demonstration of normal structure of the different tissues and detection of the various pathological changes in the tissues affected by diseases. Methods for specimen collection, fixation, processing and laboratory preparation are presented. Introduction to the general pathological changes in the different tissues and organs in disease and the concept of diagnostic cytology for various organs.
MLLABO 602 Medical Laboratory Instrumentation
Study of the principles and uses of laboratory equipment and techniques, photometry, spectrometry, PH meter, centrifuges, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, nephlometry, turbidimetry, electrophoresis, ion selective electrodes, osmometry, chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry, radiation counters, immunochemistry analyzers. Autoanalyzers in clinical chemistry, hematology and microbiology.
MLHIST 603 Histopathology & cytology II
This course concentrates on special laboratory procedures including immunohistology, plastic histology, electronmicroscopy, enzyme histochemistry cell and tissue culture and general cytological techniques for collection and preparation of various samples.
MLPARA 604 Clinical Parasitology
The life cycle of various parasitic helmenths and protozoa. Arthropods as gents and vectors of diseases. Examination of clinical specimens for protozoan and helmenth parasites. Brief description of the clinical manifestations of parasitic diseases with special emphasis on parasitic diseases endemic in the different areas of the Arab world. Host response to parasitic infestation. The student has to spend 4 weeks of active training in clinical parasitology laboratory performing stool and urine analysis with special emphasis on diagnosis of protozoal and helminthic diseases.
MLFORE 605 Forensic and Toxicological Chemistry
Laboratory tests for poisoned patients. Monitoring of therapeutic drugs. Detection of alcohol in clinical specimens. Doping tests for substance addiction. DNA finger printing and the application of molecular biology in medical legal cases.
MLCLIN 606 Clinical Chemistry II
Evaluation of renal function, urinalysis, liver function tests, the use of enzymes in clinical diagnosis, hormonal assay, tumor markers, acid-bare balance and blood gas analysis, electrolyte determination.
MLBANK 701 Blood Banking
The student has to spend 4 weeks of active training in the blood bank participating in all the laboratory activities including sample collection, blood grouping and pre-transfusion testing, blood collection, processing and storage. Theoretical topics are to be discussed during 2 hours lecture per week.
MLBACT 702 Clinical Bacteriology & Infection control
The student has to spend 6 weeks of active training in the microbiology lab. Participating in all the procedures performed, including staining, cultures, identification of microorganisms, culture and sensitivity testing, and the special staining techniques. 2 hours theoretical lectures per week with mutual discussions will update the practical.
MLHEMA 703 Clinical hematology
The student has to spend 6 weeks of active training hematology lab. Participating in all the laboratory activities including spreading, fixation, staining and examination of a blood film, blood cell counting and differentiation, coagulation testing and interpretation of all test results. 2 hours lectures per week will refresh the theoretical and the practical knowledge.
MLSERO 801 Clinical Immunology & Serology
The student has to spend 4 weeks in clinical immunology and serology section in the microbiology laboratory to practice actively all the methods used in serological diagnosis of various diseases. 2 hours theoretical lecture per week with intensive discussions of practical experience will update the knowledge in serological diagnosis based on antigen- antibody reaction.
MLSERO 802 Cytogenetics & Histopathology Technique
The student has to spend 4 weeks of intensive training in the histopathology laboratory to practice the various methods of preparing and processing the tissue samples. One hour theoretical lecture per week will update the basic theoretical knowledge.
MLCLIN 803 Clinical Chemistry III
The student has to spend 6 weeks of active training in the clinical chemistry laboratory participating in all the laboratory procedures performed. Theoretical knowledge is reinforced through regular 2 hours lecture per week with mutual discussions related to the practical experience and interpretation of the test results.
MLRES 804 Directed Study
The student has to perform a research work under supervision of staff member to get the experience in research and making a graduation project. The course focuses on teach the student the methods of research and presentation of his thesis.
Elective Medical Laboratory Requirements
EL INFE 701 Infection control
The course focuses on introducing the polices and produces used to minimize the risk of spreading infections especially in hospitals and medical centres and clinics. The course stresses also on the methodology of disinfection and waste disposal.
EL NANO 802 Nanotechnology
This course provides an overview of the materials, safety and equipment issues encountered in the practice of biomedical engineering. The course will address molecular probe engineering, nanomaterials characterization techniques, separation sciences, and applications of nanotechnology in biological detection, sensing, and imaging.
Objectives:
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
· Understand, explain, and discuss scientific papers in the area of molecular engineering and nanotechnology.
· Apply nanotechnology and bioengineering approaches to future research and design projects.
EL PCR 703 Laboratory investigations in molecular biology
The course focuses on the basics of molecular biology including the structure of nucleic acids (DNA& RNA). The course also lay stress on methods used in the diagnosis of viral diseases, tumors, bacterial and immunological disorders and discovery of prenatal genetic disorders with special emphasis on PCR.
EL ICU 804 Laboratory investigations in intensive care units
The course focuses on the laboratory tests commonly performs for patients in the intensive care units laying emphasis on the precautions of sampling, testing and reporting the results. Rapid methods or point of care testing are also presented.
EL FETU 405 Perinatal Laboratory Investigations
The course focuses on the laboratory investigations during the stages of pregnancy for the mother and for detection of congenital anomalies in the fetus. The laboratory investigations for the mother before and after delivery and for the fetus before delivery focus on diseases that can modulate the course of pregnancy.
EL PUBL 501 Public Health Administration
This course provides the students with the basic principles and components of public health administration and to the different roles of nurse within the different health program in Egypt.
EL COMM 502 Communication and Human Relation
This course will provide the student with the basic concepts related to the human relationships and its application in providing medical services in both the hospital settings and the community.
EL RMETH 503 Methodology
This course introduces the student with basic research concept, language, processes, logic and methods of research in medical laboratory, In addition to the study of measurements that helps in surveying and estimating the factors affecting the community health including basic research and vital statistics.
EL NUTR 602 General and Applied Nutrition
This course aims to give the students good information about the major components of food namely carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water with emphasis on daily requirements for normal subject and the nutritional restrictions in certain diseases. Medical problems related to nutrition as obesity, cachexia and nutritional deficiency diseases art to be emphasized.
EL EDUC 604 Health Education
This course focuses on health and health behavior. It also focuses on methods, media, health education program, and evaluation. It provides opportunity to the student to utilize basic scientific principles and concepts through teaching programs.
EL EPID 605 Epidemiology
This course aims to give the students a good understanding of the epidemiological data concerning seasonal epidemics. Protection, rapid diagnosis, isolation of patients and prophylactic measure are to be stressed upon.
